More About Purana Qila

Purana Qila’s history dates back to both the Indo-Islamic and Mughal/Afghan periods. The fort is believed to have been built atop remnants of an earlier structure by Pandavas called Indraprastha, making its existence even more fascinating due to its combined mythological, historical, and architectural significance.

Three massive gates–Delhi Gate, Humayun Gate, and Bara Darwaza–of the fort are elegantly constructed with intricate Islamic carvings and stonework. At the same time, inside stands Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque, an example of early Mughal architecture.

Purana Qila is an ideal destination for families and picnickers, offering a peaceful respite from city life in Lodhi Gardens and Neela Gumbad nearby. At nightfall, an evening light-and-sound show narrates its history, making this a must-experience event.

Architecture of Purana Qila

Purana Qila’s architecture is an impressive synthesis of Mughal and Afghan styles. The impressive sandstone walls that surround its fort serve as evidence of its strong defensive structures built during Mughal rule.

Fort Napier boasts grand arched gates, while its Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque contains intricate arches with Islamic calligraphy. Bara Darwaza, one of the fort’s gates, boasts an arched doorway framed by two cylindrical towers for a commanding appearance.

Fort Moat can still be explored via boat ride; once serving as a defense mechanism, it is now an attraction. The fort’s design incorporated both defensive needs and decorative features typical of Mughal architecture into its overall plan.

Best Time to Visit Purana Qila

Purana Qila should be visited between October and March when temperatures range from 10degC to 25degC for optimal outdoor exploration. These times are ideal for strolling through its grounds and appreciating its surroundings.
